Job Description

GO Magazine, the nation’s most widely read free lesbian publication, seeks an experienced, skilled and capable journalist to lead our editorial and production operations in New York City. For the right candidate, this is an opportunity to flourish as a journalist, grow as a leader, and have an impact in the LGBTQ community and beyond.

Working closely with the Editor-in-Chief, this ambitious editor will develop the magazine’s overall editorial priorities and implement our content strategy. The Managing Editor will drive and coordinate daily digital operations and will be responsible for the logistics of producing a bimonthly print magazine.

This results-driven leader must have proven experience as a writer and an as editor, stellar organizational skills, a hunger to soar above the competition, and the ability to maintain their cool in high-stress situations. This person will be a self-starter and a multi-tasker who is willing to work as necessary to ensure that GO remains a high-quality, indispensable publication.

The Managing Editor should have a command of grammar, punctuation and clarity, and bring razor-sharp attention to detail to everything they touch. This person should be a deft writer and editor of both news and lifestyle content (profiles, travel, the arts, etc.), and will maintain an editorial calendar that reflects the needs of our readership.

The Managing Editor will work closely with a team of writers, photographers and interns with various levels of experience to produce a reserve of content. Candidates should be at home recruiting and nurturing new writers while confidently editing professionals and growing the magazine’s stable of contributors.

The Managing Editor will serve as one of the public faces of GO, and should be comfortable navigating both social media and real-life realms. Candidates should have an understanding of audience engagement and how to expand our network while consistently serving the needs of our community of lesbian and queer women readers. Some evening and weekend work may be required as needed.

Requirements:

You are:

· A journalist with at least 5 years of experience as a reporter or editor at a print or online publication.

· A proven leader with at least 2 years of experience in a management role (associate editor or higher)

· Based in New York City or willing to relocate immediately

· Digitally savvy, with a proven understanding of site analytics, audience engagement and content promotion

You have:

· Proven editing experience

· A thorough, demonstrable knowledge of LGBT issues and community

· Strong ideas about GO’s content strategy

· A robust social media presence

· A rolodex of sources spanning news and lifestyle, and an eye for scoops

· Outstanding organizational and time management skills

· Sharp critical thinking skills

· An eye for strong visuals

· Willingness to work occasional nights and weekends as necessary

· Ability to juggle multiple tasks at once

· Patience and grace under pressure

· A desire to represent GO Magazine at public events and in the media

· Enthusiasm to enjoy the many professional perks of the position
