Interactive Fellowship
Department: Editorial, Interactive
Reports to: Deputy Editor, Strategy
Normal location: New York, NY
Terms & conditions: May 2017 – November 2017, Full-time, 40 hours per week

Summary and purpose of role: Guardian News & Media is seeking an Interactive Fellow for our 2017 Fellowship program. The Interactive Fellow will work with the US Interactive and Visuals team to produce high quality interactives and graphics for the web.

The Interactive Fellow will be expected to find and pitch stories/ideas; collect, clean, and analyze data; conceptualize, design, and build interactive applications and graphics.

Candidates should be able to provide examples of interactive projects and/or graphics journalism they have produced and edited.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge & experience
-Experience producing interactive graphics and news projects for desktop and mobile
-Strong familiarity with HTML, CSS, JavaScript
-Familiarity with graphics and charting best practices
-Solid understanding of the principles of good web design
-Experience with JavaScript frameworks is a bonus but not a requirement
-Interest in and enthusiasm for creating innovative approaches to news
-Proficiency with mapping tools is highly desired
-Understanding of the editorial aims and values of Guardian US

Skills and behaviors
-Flexible mindset and a willingness to learn new tools
-Ability to quickly pick up new tools and programming practices
-Ability to generate creative, new ideas and to transform them into reality using code
-Good interpersonal skills and enthusiasm for working collaboratively within a team
-Passion for finding creative, new ways to tell news stories through visuals
-Excellent time management skills

The fellowship program will run from May through November 2017 (approximately 6 months depending on start date) and is open to graduates of undergraduate and graduate schools.

This is a paid fellowship, and you will work approximately 40 hours per week.

All fellows must be authorized to work in the United States and live within a commutable distance from the area in which the role is based.
