Job Description

The General Assignment Reporter/Producer researches, reports and produces multiple news stories daily for digital, social and broadcast media. In the digital-first world of breaking news, this reporter will turn around copy quickly for the web and social media and produce fast turn-around copy and spot news for broadcast. The reporter/producer records and edits material on a digital audio workstation, interviews newsmakers, and works with the news and web staff to ensure that the news of the day is well represented online and in newscasts in a timely manner. This reporter also produces material for national networks.

Working Conditions:

The reporter will work primarily in the office though occasionally will report from the field. Their shift will include at least one weekend day and will begin at 7 a.m. The work may require travel to remote locations, working evenings or weekends, and possibly working in inclement weather.  Lifting and carrying equipment up to 20 pounds is sometimes required.    

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Experience reporting for radio or digital.
  • Passion for news and knowledge of current events.
  • Demonstrated ability to work quickly under deadline.
  • Ability to recognize breaking news.
  • Experience using digital audio recording and editing equipment and computer workstations.
  • Strong writing skills.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues in collaborative newsroom environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply high ethical standards to reporting.
  • An understanding of the quickly changing news environment.  

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism.
  • Experience working in a fast-paced newsroom.
  • Photography or video production skills.
  • Ability to deliver news live on the air.
  • Passion for the mission of OPB News.
  • Understanding of the people, places, and key stories affecting the region.
  • Ability to improve already strong wire service content.
  • Ability to quickly find daily news from long, complicated stories.
  •  Ability to stay calm in times of stress.
  • Relentless attention to detail.
  • An eye for diverse voices and sources in stories.
