Formed from the merger of City Hall and The Capitol newspapers in 2012, City & State provides insightful and detailed coverage of the politics, the policies and the influential individuals and organizations all over New York.

Job Description

City & State is a weekly magazine on New York politics, geared toward political insiders and enthusiasts. We are accepting fall internship applications from students seeking data journalism experience and who want to develop NY Freedom of Information Law request (FOIL) expertise for grad school credit. We will select one City & State Data Journalism Intern.

The intern will begin Sept. 13 in the editorial department and will work on creating a streamlined FOIL request and request tracking process. The goal is to provide a unique opportunity to develop expertise in making FOI requests and data-centric day stories.

The internship may also involve research, reporting, posting on social media and other related responsibilities. The internship runs about 3 months during the fall semester, 10-20 hours per week; start date and time frame flexible. Position is unpaid; interns MUST be able to receive academic credit.

This person will need to have a facility with spreadsheets, a keen interest in FOIA/FOIL requests and be excited by the treasure trove of previously-undisclosed government data they can provide, as well as an strong interest in pursuing data-driven, investigative journalism in the public interest.
