Media Organization: Fostering Media Connections

Company Description

Fostering Media Connections (FMC) is a nonprofit news organization that harnesses the power of journalism and media to improve the lives of vulnerable children, youth and their families.

We report and produce our own coverage, which is published on three platforms: The Chronicle of Social Change, an online news site; Adoption Today, a bi-monthly online magazine; and Fostering Families Today, a bi-monthly print magazine.

We then market those stories to mainstream and niche media outlets to amplify our reach. In addition, we educate members of the media, quickly allowing them to produce more contextualized and impactful stories.

This culminates in a body of journalism that addresses systemic and personal injustices by interrogating possible solutions while also holding accountable the power structure over these
young people’s lives. This sustained flow of high-quality journalism inspires and impels policymakers at the local, state and federal level to work smarter and faster to reform the systems
that serve the nation’s most vulnerable children, youth and families.

Job Description

Fostering Media Connections (FMC), a journalism non-profit focused on issues affecting vulnerable children, youth and their families, is seeking a reporter-editor to anchor its coverage of child welfare and juvenile justice issues in New York.

We are seeking a seasoned journalist to take on an exciting new role with FMC. This person will write and edit news and feature stories about the child welfare and juvenile justice systems in both New York City and state. The ideal candidate will be passionate about children’s issues and news writing.

Stories produced, assigned and edited by the reporter-editor will primarily appear in FMC’s flagship news site, the California-based The Chronicle of Social Change. But his or her work will also feed into FMC’s other publications – Fostering Families Today and Adoption Today – when appropriate.

We prize good news judgment; accuracy, precision and clarity; ability to work quickly; and a strong work ethic. The ideal candidate will have a vision for expanding FMC’s coverage in New York and the Northeast, have connections with other reporters who may follow our work, and also be willing to interface with the philanthropic community.
