Temporary Multimedia Editor, Scientific American and the Multimedia Centre of Excellence

Ready to join our dynamic, multi-faceted, global multimedia team at Nature Research, a division of Springer Nature? We are seeking a multitalented temporary multimedia journalist to produce stories for Scientific American. Viewers and readers value Nature Research and its associated brands, including Scientific American and Nature, for its thought leadership and ability to tell deep science stories. Our videos cover a broad range of science related topics. This position is highly competitive.

If you are passionate about science video story-telling and are detail-oriented, this is a great time to be part of the team. Our portfolio of video productions is growing to include social videos, livestreams, explainers, animations, and the occasional mini documentary.

You must have at least 2 years of multimedia production experience, including at least 1 year of production management experience, and a strong interest in science and technology topics. You must be able to prove your ability to reach a broad public audience with complex stories made simple.

The role, in detail
Report to the Managing Multimedia Editor
Be part of the Springer Nature editorial video “brain trust,” ie The Multimedia Centre of Excellence
Produce and/or manage multiple productions at once from concept to final deliverables
Come up with stories, write and edit scripts
Edit videos and direct other editors
Manage videographers, editors, and other production help as needed
Shoot video in our studio and out in the field
Be a pro at Adobe Creative Suite and or Final Cut Pro work flows
Create or adapt animated graphics.

Qualifications

You must bring many skills to the table, including scripting, editing, directing, shooting, and project management.

You should love science and video
Between your bachelors and advanced degrees, you should have a smattering of course work in science, journalism, or film production. A bachelors degree is required and at least a masters degree strongly preferred
You should have spent at least 5 years of your life pickled in science, whether as a journalist or a researcher or a combination of the two.
Production management experience is essential
You must be a pro at many of the following programs: Adobe Creative Cloud, especially Premier, After Effects, Photoshop, Audition, Illustrator and/or Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools.
You should be a pretty avid social media user, aware of video trends on all major platforms
Experience working with large multi-national companies is preferred but not required
A strong portfolio including productions of varying lengths from 30 seconds to 7 minutes
