Chalkbeat, the award-winning nonprofit news organization covering public education in Indiana, is looking for a staff reporter. Cover schools in Indianapolis, one of the country’s most exciting growing cities, at a time when education policy is at the heart of political conversation in the state.

Job Description

Position: Education reporter, Chalkbeat Indiana

The position requires a self-starter who is hungry to break news and dive deep in enterprise reporting; eager to understand and inform vital public policy debates; and enthusiastic about creating new models for sustainable journalism. Knowledge of and passion for urban K-12 education issues is a strong plus.

Primary responsibilities include:

➢ Conceiving and executing stories about Indianapolis public schools, from breaking news to enterprise reporting to long-term investigative projects
➢ Strong beat reporting, including developing strong, reliable sources and beating the competition
➢ Innovating our approach to presenting news and distributing content via new avenues
➢ Assisting with newsletter production and aggregation of education news stories and opinion pieces
➢ Engaging with readers throughout the reporting process and in person through Chalkbeat events
