Founded in 1850, Harper’s is the oldest general-interest monthly in the United States. Among many journalistic and literary honors, we have received nineteen National Magazine Awards, and our contributors make regular appearances in Best American anthologies and in the media. We have always published the most distinguished writers of the era: a casual trawl through the archive will reveal pieces by Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Edith Wharton, James Baldwin, Annie Dillard, David Foster Wallace, Barbara Ehrenreich, Jonathan Franzen, and many more. We are, however, equally devoted to discovering and nurturing new talent.

Job Description

Harper’s Magazine is looking for a Senior Editor. Job responsibilities include generating story ideas, bringing in writers, assigning and editing pieces, and mentoring junior staff. We publish essays, reportage, memoirs, fiction, criticism, and (especially) hybrids of the foregoing. Even in polemical pieces, narrative is the ultimate engine, and Harper’s remains committed to the density and spaciousness of the long form.

The ideal candidate should have at least five years of experience editing exceptional prose for a national audience. You should have a solid instinct for narrative structure, and for the sort of counterintuitive arguments that are essential to great journalism. Last but not least, you should be well on your way to building a stable of smart, varied, surprising writers.
