Job Description
Tricycle: The Buddhist Review is looking for a temporary Departments Editor to curate the front matter for the Winter 2019 issue of our award-winning quarterly magazine. The ideal candidate will have their finger on the pulse of the contemporary global Buddhist landscape and a familiarity with Buddhist teachings, practice, history, and current issues. They will be able to identify stories of interest to our readers, enliven copy through editing and their own writing, and work with both the in-house editorial team and a host of freelancers to create a front section that is energizing, informative, intelligent, sophisticated, and relevant.
Our front matter covers community news; short profiles and Q&As with both well-known and everyday Buddhists; new books, podcasts, apps, music, theater, and fine art, as well as travel, practice tips, and more.
Departments Editor reports to Senior Editor. This position is temporary and freelance; dates needed are June 1 to August 30. Remote applicants are welcome.
Responsibilities
-Work with the in-house editorial team as well as freelancers to fill the front section for Winter 2019 issue; assigning, editing, and writing material
-Understand and respond to the pressing current issues of the Buddhist world
-Keep track of newly released book titles, innovative retreats and gatherings, events, and other Buddhist news
-Deliver timeless Buddhist teachings to readers in a fresh and contemporary way, relating them to the world at large
-Write eye-catching HEDs and DEKs and crisp, clean copy; pitch content ideas with unique angles and hooks
-Develop and inspire writers
Requirements
-3+ years experience as a culture editor (or similar) in digital or traditional media
-Familiarity with the modern Buddhist landscape as well as Buddhist philosophy and the various traditions’ key players, both contemporary and historical
-Strong written, communication, and organizational skills
-Strong grasp of grammar and ability to pick up house style quickly
-Ability to assign and follow through on deadlines
-Ability to work independently and as part of a close-knit team
