Job Description

We are looking for an Assistant Correspondent at our New York bureau to support the bureau chief in covering the US for our Japanese readers. In order to identify the most pertinent issues to our readers in Asia, our work in overseas bureaus involves keeping a close eye on local events and trends, and providing analysis into region-specific issues. A successful candidate will have the ability to dissect and interpret a diverse range of issues including social, cultural, and political affairs for a broad audience.

Responsibilities include:
• Background research on news topics
• Monitoring latest news related to US society at large and events happening in the nearby region
• Reaching out to sources and coordinating appointments for interviews
• Occasionally conducting interviews on the ground/remotely

Candidates should be ready to:
• Develop an understanding of the latest issues in American society and politics
• Produce thoughtful and meticulous research
• Engage in forging good media relations with relevant individuals and agencies when required
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in a related field
• Keen interest in domestic social issues, politics, and current affairs
• Strong research skills and resourcefulness including use of social media
• Excellent time management skills and sense of urgency when dealing with time-sensitive tasks
• Fluency in Japanese or other languages will be a plus but not required

Unfortunately, we cannot sponsor employees for work visas; therefore, candidates must have US work authorization.
This position is great for someone who is just starting off their journalism career.
