Job Description
The Canine Review (TCR), the sole independent news organization offering investigative coverage of the pet industry, is looking for an experienced, skilled editor to assign and edit stories, help reporters develop ideas, and support the executive editor in growing and shaping a high-impact, ambitious journalism enterprise. This is a chance to join a team of creative, talented journalists, with the opportunity for rapid advancement.
TCR is a subscription-based news publication. We value independent, quality, “show not tell” reporting that adheres to the highest professional standards for ethics, accuracy, and fairness. We specialize in watchdog journalism (pardon the pun).
This is a remote-only, contract-based position. Compensation is competitive and will vary based on credentials and experience.
We are looking for someone who:
has at least 5 years of editing experience at a news organization.
has excellent news judgment and a deep understanding of how to structure and lift up stories, including large investigative projects.
is a skilled manager, who enjoys working closely with reporters and helping them to produce their best work.
thinks creatively and can conceptualize high-impact ideas for stories and projects and help shape the future direction and growth of the publication.
has shown an ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, both reporters of different skill levels, backgrounds, and supervisors.
We also hope to find someone who:
loves dogs (and pets more generally);
has a connection to a network of capable, experienced freelance reporters;
We strive to hold powerful people and institutions — , including lawmakers, pet industry lobbyists, regulators, CEOs, and others — to account.
TCR is the most authoritative source for information about the pet industry. For example, TCR is the leading provider of journalism about pet health insurance; its reporting was recently cited at a national meeting of state insurance regulators. Similarly, TCR’s reporting on the connection between rising cases of canine liver disease and dangerous levels of copper in commercial dog food brands was recently cited at a pet food industry bi-annual meeting.
TCR welcomes all U.S.-based applicants.
