Paid Journalism Internship

Media Organization: The Boston Globe

Company Description

The Boston Globe is a multiplatform company that covers New England. The newspaper, founded in 1872, is the region’s largest daily publication and the winner of 21 Pulitzer Prizes. Also part of the company is Boston.com, one of the nation's leading newspaper websites that combines breaking news with independent community content, and BostonGlobe.com, a subscription-based news website that showcases Globe staff articles and visual material. The Globe company is owned by The New York Times Co.

Job Description

The Boston Globe's summer internship program has been giving college students who are interested in journalism a peek into the industry for more than 50 years.

The majority of interns work as general assignment reporters in the City/Region section. Other reporter-interns work in Sports, Living/Arts, or Business. Reporting interns are treated as staffers hired to cover the city of Boston and locales throughout New England; they write breaking news stories as well as craft enterprise pieces. Interns go on daily assignments and leave the program with dozens of clips. Each reporter-intern works with the writing coach, and the program includes weekly educational seminars on journalism issues, including a critique session for the reporters.

The Globe also hires an intern to work on the News copy desk, as well as an intern for the Design department and for the Photo department. The copy editing intern works on stories from City/Region, National, Foreign and Business, including Page One stories. Design interns create sections fronts, as well as informational graphics; the photo intern shoots for all of the sections. Every intern is also responsible for producing online work.

The 12-week paid program has 10 slots, and is open to undergraduate students, graduating seniors, and journalism graduate school students who have not had professional experience. Because the internship is demanding and fast-paced, applicants must have had at least one prior daily newspaper internship.

The deadline to apply is November 1, 2010.

All applications MUST be mailed.
