NPR is looking for a creative editor, producer and writer with daily news and online experience, an arts journalism background and a passion for publishing to be a key player in building up the Books section on NPR.org. This is a full-time union position in Washington, DC, with a very competitive salary and excellent benefits.

Job Description

DUTIES: Plans and schedules Arts coverage for NPR.org with emphasis on the Books section. Edits and produces Web stories and special projects. Writes and edits compelling headlines and other display copy. Selects and edits photographs and creates multimedia content, including slide shows and audio presentations. Produces and lays out stories using NPR's content management system and other digital tools. Occasionally writes original stories, blog posts and story elements. Uses news judgment to edit the home page and NPR arts and program pages.

Minimum Requirements for Producer I: At least four years of experience in daily news (print or Web). Solid, independent news judgment. Expertise in daily coverage of arts news. Experience working on a Web publication. Experience using a content management system. Experience image editing with PhotoShop. Familiarity with a variety of computer systems and software applications. Ability to adapt to changes in equipment, software and workflow. Demonstrated ability in editing, news writing, copy-editing and headline-writing. Demonstrated ability to write on deadline. Experience with social media and online communities. Demonstrated ability to write across media platforms. Experience planning coverage and making assignments to writers. Experience with intellectual property issues involved in publications generally and Web publications in particular. Strong oral communication skills. Demonstrated ability to generate and implement creative ideas. Demonstrated ability to assimilate and organize large amounts of information. Ability to maintain high journalistic ethics and standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness. Ability and willingness to work nights and/or weekends. Ability and willingness to work varied shifts. Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure. Incumbent must be able to edit breaking stories for immediate posting. Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations. Severance provisions of the AFTRA collective bargaining agreement will apply should you choose not to accept a transfer. Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.

Minimum Requirements for Producer II: Requirements of Producer I, plus: At least six years of experience in online news. At least two years of experience in daily journalism. Demonstrated excellence in editing, news writing, copy-editing and headline-writing. Superior ability to write on deadline and experience writing for blogs. Expertise with social media and online communities. At least one year of Web production experience. Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas. Experience writing across media platforms. At least two years of Web production experience. Superior skill in editing, news writing, copy-editing and headline-writing. At least one year of experience in editorial decision-making.

Preferred Requirements for Producer I and Producer II: Demonstrated knowledge of books, literature and the publishing industry. Experience producing on digital audio workstations. HTML or other coding skills. Proven excellence with still and/or video photography, video editing, and audio production.
