Journalism Internship
Media Organization: Talking Points Memo
Company Description
Talking Points Memo is the flagship blog of TPM Media LLC, which also publishes TPMmuckraker, TPMDC, TPMtv and TPMCafe. Founder and editor Josh Marshall began publishing Talking Points Memo during the 2000 Florida vote recount. The site specializes in original reporting on government and politics and offers breaking news coverage, investigative reporting, high profile guest bloggers and a book club.
Job Description
TPM interns in our New York office are involved in every aspect of our operation and have a hand in everything we do. They work alongside our reporters to write and break stories, help our editors keep a finger on the pulse of the news day, and produce all kinds of digital media from youtube clips to mash-up photographs. The interns also attend weekly brown bag lunches with reporters, editors and publishing staff to learn the ins and outs of the new media business.
Half of our current staff is made up of former TPM interns. Others have moved on to jobs in new and old media alike, working for Think Progress, The New Republic, The Wall Street Journal, Huffington Post, The New York Sun, The New Yorker, The Washington Post and more.
In early 2009 we introduced our new Editorial Fellows program. A limited number of interns are invited to join our Editorial Fellows program, which runs an additional three (3) to six (6) months and comes with a stipend.
Because each intern is encouraged to work in multiple parts of our operation, it's important that applicants have a basic understanding of new media technologies (blogging, youtube, etc.) and a desire and ability to learn quickly.
