Media Organization: Atlantic Media Company
Company Description
Based in the Watergate in Washington, DC, Atlantic Media Company is a nationally-recognized, award-winning, 300-person media enterprise whose flagship print and online publications — The Atlantic, National Journal, and Government Executive — are among the most influential media outlets in America.
Job Description
Atlantic Media Company offers high achieving recent college graduates a unique opportunity to participate in the Atlantic Media Fellowship Program. The Atlantic Media Fellowship Program is a structured, paid fellowship that provides serious career exposure and training for top-tier talent committed to editorial-side careers in media.
We are currently recruiting one Fellow for a 5-month stint with TheAtlantic.com starting in February 2011 and ending in June 2011.
TheAtlantic.com is seeking a Fellow to support the Atlantic Food Channel, a Web site featuring original reporting, recipes, and opinion from respected chefs, home cooks, farmers, artisans, and bartenders; authorities on food policy and nutrition; and fresh voices on sustainability, food activism, and cooking for the joy of it.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented and resourceful, with strong writing, editing, and interpersonal skills and an interest in magazine-style journalism. Previous experience in both print and online media is helpful, as is a passion for and familiarity with food. You should also be high-energy and enterprising, capable of not only following through with everyday tasks but also going above and beyond to brainstorm independent projects and ways to make the site even stronger. The position rewards this kind of initiative, and an especially driven Fellow will have significant opportunities to write and edit.
Responsibilities include:
- Working closely with Atlantic senior editor Corby Kummer and Food Channel producer Daniel Fromson to prepare 5+ articles per day for publication, including copy editing, formatting articles according to the Food Channel’s style guidelines, coding pages and slide shows in basic HTML, and finding and editing photos
-Growing our social media presence by aggregating food news and blog posts from around the Web and writing engaging, witty tweets for our Today’s Specials Twitter feed
-Promoting Food Channel articles using social media (Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon, etc.)
-Working closely with the site’s editors on assorted research projects
-Depending on the interests and abilities of the Fellow, more substantial editing of articles and opportunities to write for both the Food Channel and other parts of TheAtlantic.com
Additionally, the Atlantic Media Fellows participate in the Atlantic Media Academy, a comprehensive curriculum providing a 360-degree view of the modern media industry covering the editorial, operational, and economic sides of journalism today.
Atlantic Media recruits with a focus on two principal attributes: force of intellect, a discipline and rigor of thought as manifested, often, in exceptional academic performance, and spirit of generosity, a natural disposition towards service and selfless conduct.
Atlantic Media Company is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
