The New York Law Journal is seeking a Law Firm Reporter. This reporter will have the opportunity to cover the legal profession as it responds to economic, technological and global challenges. The ideal reporter for this position will be interested in and familiar with the economics of the legal profession (hourly bills, contingent fees, lockstep and performance-based pay, etc.), differences among major practice areas (litigation, M & A, bankruptcy, private equity, intellectual property, etc.), hiring practices and major concepts of legal ethics (conflicts, privilege, etc.). The reporter must understand the pecking order of New York law firms and how their status correlates with client lists and practice strengths. The reporter must be able to interpret trends in law firm business, including the effects of the current economic downturn on the entire legal market in New York, including firms, government, the non- profit sector and law schools. This reporter will also keep track of developments in the economics mid-size law firms.
The law firm reporter is also be responsible for finding and following litigation involving lawyers or law firms as plaintiffs or defendants, and report on attorney disciplinary proceedings. A talent for writing decisions on a myriad of legal topics and covering live civil and criminal court proceedings is essential.
The beat requires an aggressive reporter accustomed to daily deadlines. Competition mainly comes from the top newspapers in the country, the New York Times, and Wall Street Journal as well as a growing host of blogs.
College and several years experience required. Law degree a plus
