Job Description

The New York bureau of the Tokyo Shimbun, Japan’s largest regional daily newspaper, is seeking a full-time staff reporter/researcher to assist Japanese correspondents.

The ideal candidate would be an aspiring reporter with sharp journalistic instincts and strong research skills. Responsibilities include covering top stories in international affairs, the United Nations, the financial market and U.S. domestic issues. You will be required to arrange/transcribe interviews and handle logistics for feature stories. This is a reporting position with no writing or byline opportunities.

The job will involve, though not be limited to:

- monitoring breaking news through online, print and broadcast mediums

- researching news in the Western Hemisphere with a focus on social, economic, political and foreign affairs

- attending news briefings

- conducting man-on-the-street interviews

- interviewing/developing relationships with key experts and sources

QUALIFICATIONS:

We are looking for someone resourceful and flexible and able to handle multiple tasks on deadline. Must have a Bachelor’s Degree (liberal arts preferred) and native English fluency. Japanese language skills are required for this position. A background in economics and/or business is also beneficial.

COMPENSATION:

We offer a competitive salary and benefits, including health and dental insurance, paid overtime and transportation/cell phone reimbursement. There will also be occasional travel assignments so a valid passport and driver’s license is also required.
