Media Organization: PBS NewsHour
The PBS NewsHour is a television news program broadcast internationally each week night. For 30 years, millions of Americans and citizens of the world have turned to MacNeil/Lehrer Productions for the solid, reliable reporting that has made the PBS NewsHour one of the most trusted news programs in television.
The Desk Assistant (DA) position is part of a six-month entry-level program aimed at providing practical experience in a broadcast news setting. Students graduating after the Fall 2013 semester as well as recent alums can apply.
The DAs are exposed to all aspects involved in producing a nightly television news program. This position is divided into rotations among the different units that compose the NewsHour: research, newsroom, tape library, reporting, and production. Over the course of the program, each of the 8 Desk Assistants hired will work in 3 of the 6 different rotations for a period of two months each. They also act as support staff for Senior Producers, Associate Producers, Reporters and Production Assistants, by answering phones, sorting mail, distributing paper and other administrative tasks. Finally, Desk Assistants will attend a series of breakfasts with various members of our organization including correspondents, producers and reporters.
Please send a resume, cover letter and application to the Desk Assistant Coordinator (see below). You can download an application as a Microsoft Word document on our website (http://www.pbs.org/newshour/aboutus/openings/da_broadcast.html) or receive one upon request from Sarah McHaney, the Desk Assistant Coordinator.
All applications must be submitted or postmarked by October 30, 2013
