Company Description

Mother Jones is an award-winning nonprofit news organization that publishes in-depth investigative reporting, game-changing breaking news, and innovative coverage across politics, the environment, health, human rights, culture, and more. Mother Jones has received numerous awards and accolades in its 37 year history, including several National Magazine Awards for General Excellence, and recently the George Polk Award for Political Reporting and the National Magazine Award for Video for David Corn's reporting of the "47 Percent" story that had a significant impact on the 2012 US Presidential election. As a nonprofit, reader-supported publication, Mother Jones asks the tough questions, tackles the important issues, and holds power accountable because our readers—to whom we're solely obligated—expect no less. Job Description

The public affairs fellowship at Mother Jones is a great opportunity for upstart changemakers looking to learn the tools of the media trade. How and when does great reporting parlay into sound policy? What are strategies for reaching influencers, legislators, and opinion-makers? How can innovative reporting be translated from the page to live and interactive events?

Join Mother Jones and learn how an award-winning news shop amplifies its voice. Fellows assist in all aspects of promotion and outreach for Mother Jones reporting including tracking impact, researching new opportunities, and generally tending to all of the department’s little-but-vital things.

This opportunity includes ongoing skills-building in media relations and communications and broader trainings in all aspects of nonprofit publishing. This fellowship is full-time and is based in San Francisco. Fellows receive a stipend of $1,000/month supported by grants from the Irving Harris and Lannan Foundations (and by the generosity of our nearly 39,000 contributors). The fellowship lasts six months, with the opportunity to apply for an additional six months as a senior fellow (at an elevated monthly stipend rate).

To Apply

We are currently accepting applications for a January 2014 start date. Applicants must be able to commit to this full-time position for the full six months. To apply, please send a résumé and cover letter to jobs (at) motherjones (dot) com with "Public Affairs Fellow" in the subject line.
