Job Description

The leading website for weather news and information has a contract opportunity for a freelance assistant photo editor. The ideal candidate will know how to research, acquire and optimize images that appear across our many digital platforms. The ideal candidate would also know how to create content that grabs audiences and understand how users consume content online.

This position will be based at The Weather Channel’s New York headquarters.

Specific Responsibilities:
-Generate story ideas
-Produce stories and slideshows
-Work with photographers and artists to acquire rights for their images
-Identify great stories and galleries among our content partners' pitches
-Identify breaking news stories that would fit under the weather vertical

Required Skills:
-Knowledge of SEO best practices
-Experience in stock photography, photojournalism (AP, Getty Images) and images under the Creative Commons license
-Proven ability to understand what is share-worthy on social media, such as Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, etc.
-Ability to craft headlines that engage readers
-Sharp writing and editing skills
-Experience in a breaking news environment
-Proficient in Adobe Photoshop
-Resourceful and responsible when obtaining images and interacting with social media communities
-Ability to multi-task effectively and work with minimal supervision
-Must be organized, detail-oriented, have excellent follow-through in all phases of each project
-Knowledge of HTML
