Job Description

Next Magazine, New York’s gay guide, is looking for an energetic mid-level editor to join our team. Successful candidates will have at least two years’ editorial experience as well as expertise in pitching, packaging and line-editing stories for print and online outlets. Experience at a weekly publication or blog is a plus, as well as familiarity with New York’s gay nightlife and entertainment industries.

Responsibilities:

Pitching, writing and editing multiple stories for one of the magazine’s sections on a weekly basis.

Uploading all section content to our CMS.

Working with our art director to conceptualize fun, fresh and engaging story ideas and layouts.

Writing weekly event listings.

Writing features and interviewing celebrities and other notables as needed.

Assisting art director in acquiring photos and photo credits.

Managing a team of freelance writers.

Curating and posting online photo galleries.

Qualifications:

B.A. in English, Journalism, Media Studies or related field.

At least 2 years’ experience working in an editorial capacity.

Experience working in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.

Superior attention to detail and copy editing skills.

An ability to generate quality, engaging editorial and blog content rapidly.

A passion for gay and pop culture, entertainment, nightlife and New York City.

Familiarity with current events as they relate to our readership.

Experience with CMS, InDesign or Quark. (Photoshop a plus.)

A superior ability to multitask.

Film, TV, publishing, nightlife and music industry contacts a major plus.
