Journalism Internship

Media Organization: New York Observer's business trade publications

Company Description

The Mortgage Observer is the finance section of the New York Observer, and the Commercial Observer looks at commercial real estate in New York City (interns would work for both titles). Our business coverage is hard news with an occasional wink and a healthy dose of skepticism, so the hard news focus need not deter the more literarily inclined student. Interns will have articles assigned by us but also have the opportunity to sit in on pitch meetings for the paper generally, where we have additional sections, including, art, culture, technology and politics. They will also leave with a wider sense of the power players in the exciting and controversial worlds of New York City real estate development and finance--a source group that any determined writer can turn into future articles, and jobs, we believe.

Job Description

Interns will pitch and write breaking news, longer feature articles and analysis pieces for our weekly e-newsletter, weekly newspaper and monthly print magazine, all of which focus on commercial real estate. The internship is not an exercise in procuring lattes--on the contrary, myself and my colleagues make a point of avoiding assigning any administrative duties. This summer, for instance, each intern gotten more than 20 bylines online and in print.
