Chalkbeat is a nonprofit news organization covering educational change efforts in the communities where improvement matters most. The network has bureaus in New York,Colorado, Indiana, and Tennessee. Chalkbeat was created as a merger of GothamSchools and EdNews Colorado, independent news nonprofits now known as Chalkbeat New York and Chalkbeat Colorado. Our mission is to inform the decisions and actions that lead to better outcomes for children and families by providing deep, local coverage of education policy and practice.

Job Description

The position requires a self-starter who is hungry to break news; eager to dive into vital public policy debates; and enthusiastic about creating new models for sustainable journalism. Knowledge of and passion for urban K-12 education issues is a strong plus.

Primary responsibilities include:

➢ Conceiving, reporting, and executing stories about the New York City public schools, from breaking news to feature stories to long-term investigative projects
➢ Developing sources and collecting scoops on a competitive beat
➢ Innovating our approach to presenting news and distributing content via new avenues
➢ Assisting with aggregation of education news stories and opinion pieces
➢ Engaging with readers throughout the reporting process and in person through Chalkbeat events
