Journalism Job

Media Organization: ProPublica

Company Description

ProPublica is an independent, non-profit newsroom that produces investigative journalism in the public interest. Our work focuses exclusively on truly important stories, stories with “moral force.” We do this by producing journalism that shines a light on exploitation of the weak by the strong and on the failures of those with power to vindicate the trust placed in them.

Job Description

ProPublica is seeking a senior editor for audience and engagement to lead our efforts to make readers and communities a central part of how we do accountability journalism. Engaging readers in all aspects of our reporting has been at the heart of our work since our earliest days, in groundbreaking projects like Free the Files and the Segregation Now “Six Words” collaboration. We have carried this approach into our recent work on crowd-powered news, from our Agent Orange initiative to the Voices of Patient Harm.

We want you to lead us to do even more.
Understanding audience and community engagement are critical to our future as an organization, from the way we report and tell stories to the impact that work has in the world to engaging our audience to support our work, financially and otherwise.

This is a senior position. You will lead a team that works closely with the entire organization, laying out a vision and bringing the skills to implement it. This job is based in New York.

We’re looking for someone who has…
• A significant track record of innovating around engaging readers, before, during and after the reporting process.
• Experience identifying key metrics, analyzing data, and communicating insights.
• Demonstrated enthusiasm for collaboration; specifically, working across teams to identify opportunities, resources, and/or the potential for collaborative projects to develop.

To Apply

What you should send us:
The most important part by far is your past projects. Send us URLs to your best work. Include a few sentences letting us know what role you played in each. Don’t be shy — tell us what worked (numbers and evidence of impact welcome!) and how you’d do it differently next time.

We also want to hear your ideas:
What are you excited about doing here, and where do you think we should go next? Keep it short, but give us something to think about before your interview.

Send those along with a resume to: engagement.job@propublica.org
