Broadcast News Assistant Program
ROLLING APPLICATION PROCESS — NO STRICT DEADLINE
Broadcast News Assistant duration: six-month term
Location: Arlington, Virginia
The News Assistant position is an entry-level program designed for recent graduates and aimed at providing practical experience in a broadcast news setting. The News Assistants are exposed to all aspects involved in producing a nightly television news program. News Assistants must apply for unit-specific positions detailed below. In addition to their daily duties, News Assistants attend a series of breakfasts with various members of our organization, including correspondents, producers, and reporters.
NEWS ASSISTANT UNITS DUTIES
NATIONAL AFFAIRS: The National Affairs News Assistant performs a variety of duties for the National Affairs unit, including providing basic research, finding and pre-interviewing guests, logging feeds, and aiding reporters, producers and correspondents.
POLITICS: The Politics News Assistant performs a variety of duties for the Politics unit, including providing basic research, finding and pre-interviewing guests, logging feeds, and aiding reporters, producers and correspondents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Good writing and research skills.
• Demonstrated interest in journalism and/or television production.
• Pleasant phone manner and good administrative skills.
• Strong work ethic and effective time management.
• Knowledge of PBS NewsHour‘s journalistic style.
• Prior experience in a broadcast news setting is strongly preferred.
The News Assistant position pays $13 an hour with overtime eligibility. Additionally, this position is eligible for our 403(b) retirement plan and medical benefits.
