Breaking News Fellowship
Department: Editorial, Newsdesk
Reports to: Deputy Editor, News
Office location: New York, NY
Terms & Conditions: May 2017 – November 2017, Full-time, 40 hours per week

Guardian News & Media is now seeking two enthusiastic Breaking News Fellows to work with the news desk, to produce breaking news in a variety of formats across all of our digital platforms.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Key responsibilities and duties:
•Pitching ideas for exciting and interesting stories to the Guardian US news desk
•Working with the Guardian US team on formulating and pitching completed stories across the social web
•Writing or contributing to news articles, live blogs, explainers and social-powered news
•Producing clean, accurate material on breaking news to deadline
•Working with the news desk on determining the most suitable format for live and breaking news stories
•Ensuring that published material is kept up to date with the latest information
•Monitoring social media for conversation-starting stories and reactions, and developing these as news stories or in other formats for theguardian.com

Skills and behaviors:
•Experience as a reporter on a college and/or local newspaper, or blog or news website
•Sound experience in a variety of digital storytelling formats
•Excellent knowledge of news sources and social media
•Ability to work to deadlines and deliver stories and work on time

The fellowship program will run from May through November 2017 (approximately 6 months depending on start date) and is open to graduates of undergraduate and graduate schools.

This is a paid fellowship, and you will work approximately 40 hours per week.

All fellows must be authorized to work in the United States and live within a commutable distance from the area in which the role is based.
