Job Description

OPB seeks a Reporter/Producer to join our politics team to focus on the state legislature and produce enterprise stories on Oregon state government and regional politics. OPB is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Political Reporter/Producer works with editors and OPB’s politics team to provide comprehensive coverage of the important political and policy news for our region on digital and broadcast platforms. This reporter focuses attention on Oregon state government, the state legislature, regional politics and general assignment news. They break news from the legislature and work the OPB political team to tell more enterprise stories. This reporter’s work will be shared with other stations through the Northwest News Network.

Working Conditions:

The Reporter/Producer will work both in the OPB Newsroom in Portland and the OPB office in the State Legislature. They are not required to live in Salem though they will be expected to travel regularly between the two cities, and around the region. They will work in the field, in the office, and at a digital workstation. The position may occasionally require evening or weekend work and will require flexibility during key political times such as elections.  

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities for this position.
  • At least two years of reporting experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain sources.
  • Ability to provide reporting for audio and digital platforms.
  • Strong oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to write and produce effectively under deadline.
  • Confidence to deliver news on live broadcasts, sometimes with little notice.
  • Ability to work independently and cooperatively with reporting colleagues and editors.
  • Ability to meet deadlines.
  • Enthusiasm for the role of public media in a changing journalism environment and a passion to change with it.

  Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience covering politics or legislative activity.
  • Knowledge of current regional political issues and experience.
  • Relentless attention to detail.
  • A commitment to diverse voices and sources in stories.
