Job Description
Topic is looking for a talented, proactive editorial intern to assist with research, editing, and social-media duties for the magazine. They must have strong writing, editing, research, and organizational skills, and be interested in pursuing a career in magazines or online media. Ideally, they should have some writing and/or editorial experience. A strong interest in photography, illustration, film, and other visual culture is also a plus. The internship will involve assisting editors with story research, fact-checking, proofreading, working on a CMS, assisting with organization and social media, and more. Candidates should be flexible and able to pivot easily between tasks. (Although Topic is a highly visual magazine, candidates’ text editorial and organizational skills are most important for this internship—they will not be working on video or photo editing.) The intern will work on a variety of projects depending on the publishing schedule and stories assigned.
Background & Qualifications:
Must be a current undergraduate or graduate student
Must be available to work in Topic’s New York City office (and willing to relocate if not currently based in the New York area)
Strong writing and research skills—editing experience is a plus
Interest in visual storytelling through photo, illustration, and film
Well-read and knowledgeable about current events and media coverage thereof
Knowledge of CMS (WordPress, etc.) and social media
Organized, motivated, and accountable
Strong communication and teamwork skills
Must already have work authorization in the US
Hours:
The candidate must be available to start on or before June 1.
The internship is 16–24 hours/week, $13.00/hour for 3–6 months.
