We are looking for a Senior Development Writer to join the Broad’s Development team, which supports the Broad’s research efforts by raising money from foundations, philanthropists, and individual donors.

You are an exceptional writer with a strong science background who can deliver clear, accurate, and compelling copy under intense deadline pressure. You are also a highly skilled professional who has a collegial approach to your work—it’s not about the byline but about a job well done. You don’t mind being edited by multiple stakeholders and you view edits as learning opportunities. You’re passionate about communicating science to broader audiences—and you’re equally passionate about supporting scientists in communicating their work. You’re organized and independent, but you also relish teamwork and rolling up your sleeves and pitching in when it’s all hands on deck. And you’re passionate about storytelling and believe that becoming a better writer is a lifelong endeavor.

Typical responsibilities include (and are not limited to):

Working closely with the Director of Development Communications, frontline fundraisers, and other team members to produce a wide range of materials aimed at supporting the fundraising activities of the Broad Institute. You will help craft, refine, and broadcast key messages about the Broad’s research aimed at the donor audience.
The materials you’ll produce include (but are not limited to): proposals to potential donors; stewardship reports updating donors on the scientific research their gifts have supported; feature stories for the Development website and annual Donor Report, a print publication geared for the community of donors; content for other fundraising materials and for Development-related events and visits, including summaries and biographies; and correspondence for the Director, Chief Development Officer, and key faculty at the Broad.
You will also pitch in to help with any multimedia projects, including podcasts and videos, and you will collaborate closely with the members of the Communications department on special projects.
Qualifications:

Advanced degree (M.A. or Ph.D.) in the life sciences. Experience working as a scientist or researcher in the life sciences would be a major plus, but is not required.
Five years of experience of writing for diverse audiences; work with a major publication a plus.
Strong work ethic and track record as a team player.
Editing experience—including line-editing, copy-editing, and proof-reading—a major plus.
Diplomatic skills and sense of humor.
Any application needs to include a cover letter.

The Broad Institute will not offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity.
