Job Description

The Associated Press is offering a paid 12-week summer internship at its Business News desk based in Washington, DC.

The AP Business News Intern will contribute to the AP’s cross-formats report, focusing in particular on economics coverage and consumer angles in business news. The intern will receive experience and training in text and video and will attend editorial meetings. The intern will be expected to keep up-to-date on both economics and general business news, track down information, conduct interviews, monitor social media and cover breaking news, either by phone or by going to the scene.

The intern will assist in the writing and editing of text stories as well as in the production of video under tight deadlines and aggressively cultivate sources. The intern will research and set up video news and feature stories and join location shoots. The intern will also be expected to pitch multimedia enterprise story ideas and execute at least one during the internship.

The ideal candidate will be a fast thinker, show creativity and strong news judgment with a keen interest and/or experience in business news. Candidates should be strong storytellers who are able to recognize interesting news elements and suggest their own story ideas.

Training in the various formats will include journalism ethics. The intern must become familiar with - and abide by - the AP’s statement of values and principles governing ethics.
