The Scarsdale Inquirer, a weekly community newspaper with sister papers in Westchester County, NY, is looking for an experienced and versatile reporter with exceptional storytelling skills and an engaging writing style to join its award-winning editorial staff.
Job Description
General assignment reporter: Responsible for village and schools coverage, developing and maintaining contacts throughout the coverage area with officials, employees, residents and community groups. Responsible for at least four byline stories per week, including write-ups of courts and police blotter, with daily deadlines. An additional byline article may be necessary based on breaking news or special events. Take photographs to accompany article when staff photographer is not available. Some evening and occasional weekend work will be required.
Breaking news: The editor will assign breaking news stories according to reporter's availability. Reporter may need to take photos at the scene.
Social media: Reporter will be responsible for creating a Tweet for each story, plus live Tweeting at meetings/elections when appropriate. Follow all local personalities and groups from local area and county and reTweet when appropriate. Tweet to followers about upcoming meetings and local events. Also work with editor to create Facebook posts. Other social media platforms as assigned.
Website: Reporter will be responsible for submitting shortened day-after or (in certain cases of important/breaking news) same-day stories for the web throughout the week. The schedule is determined based on what is being covered that week and when events happen.
