Fellowship

Media Organization: Chronicle of Social Change

Company Description

About The Chronicle of Social Change – The Chronicle is a national nonprofit news site that uses a mix of investigative, accountability and narrative journalism to drive the conversation around systems that serve vulnerable children, youth and their families. The Chronicle has editorial staff in California, New York, Michigan, Arizona and Wyoming, and is scaling its work nationally.

Job Description

The Chronicle of Social Change is looking for a part-time reporting fellow to join our digital news team in New York. Your work will focus on one of the most high-stakes, overlooked functions of government: the child welfare system.

Start date: Between May 15 and June 5
Duration: 6 months, ~4 days/week
Compensation: $2100/month.

The ideal candidate will be as comfortable reading obscure government reports as they are striking up conversations with politicians and advocates after hearings. They will be capable of writing competently and quickly, and identifying and reaching out to primary sources. They are creative, curious, and eager.

The fellowship’s primary responsibilities include pitching ideas and writing stories each week for The Chronicle of Social Change, and preparing a monthly newsletter. There will be some public records request filing, and some proofreading and fact checking. Occasionally, we’ll ask you to help with a statewide justice reporting project, or with planning an event for lawmakers in Albany. Visiting the communities where this system affects the most lives will be an important part of the job, too.

We are seeking someone who likely has 1 to 3 years journalism experience, which can include time spent in a journalism school program. Interest in foster care, the rights of children and parents, and the nonprofit news space is a must.

The Chronicle believes that a diverse newsroom strengthens the quality of our workplace and reporting.
