Job Description

State 23 Media seeks a full-time associate editor at Maine magazine and Maine Home+Design. The ideal candidate will have two to three years of editorial, an interest in art, design, and culture, and a curiosity about the state of Maine. This person will oversee the magazines’ front-of-the-book departments and work with the rest of the editorial team to produce the magazines and their digital counterparts. Some of the front-of-the-book departments the associate editor would work on would include interviews with interesting Mainers, a monthly design news roundup, product sourcing, and travel guides. The candidate should be detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and a confident writer and proofreader.

Essential Duties:
-Work closely with the editorial team and freelancers to collaborate and produce the monthly magazines and associated content.
-Manage the front-of-the-book departments, including researching and selecting ideas, vetting pitches, editing assigned stories, and writing others.
-Contribute to the magazines’ general coverage as needed, including researching, fact-checking, and writing stories.
-Assist with production of print magazines and websites.

Helpful Qualifications
-At least a bachelor’s degree in English or journalism or equivalent experience.
-Understanding of journalism ethics and values.
-Familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style (CMOS).
-Some experience at a magazine or other similar publication.
-Knowledge about Maine and its people, places, and culture.
-Knowledge about design, architecture, and art history.
