Job Description
UPMC Corporate is looking for a Manager, Science Writing to join our team at the US Steel Building in Pittsburgh, PA! The role will work in the US Steel building, however, there is the flexibility for work from home given the current times. This person will work closely with our clinical public relations team to publicize assigned areas, notably research findings from the top NIH-funded University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and affiliated schools of the health sciences. We’re looking for someone who is comfortable navigating scientific research, has strong writing skills, a news reporting background, and possesses a talent for translating health sciences research into engaging news for the public. Enthusiasm for pitching science news and matching stories with the best reporters and outlets is a “must.”

Responsibilities:
Cultivate and maintain strong, credible relationships with all appropriate regional, national and international media.
Manage media crises in assigned areas.
Appropriately prioritize beat areas for media coverage to meet organizational goals.
Identify and develop relationships with all appropriate contacts in regional and national broadcast news organizations for the benefit of the Media Relations group.
Demonstrate service-oriented behavior in interactions with clients and co-workers.
Work collaboratively with colleagues in other marketing and communications departments.
Create, execute and evaluate media strategies for assigned areas.
Coordinate with pertinent scientific and professional organizations to promote assigned areas.
Seek professional development opportunities for self and staff and mentor colleagues.
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Public Relations, Communications, Journalism or English Writing plus five years of combined experience in general writing with a minimum of three years of science writing, OR Master's degree plus five years of combined experience in general writing including a minimum of three years of science writing preferred, OR PhD or MD plus three years of science writing.
Significant experience translating scientific/medical language to a lay person's understanding
Experience providing clients with strategic counsel.
Experience in an academic medical center strongly preferred. Undergraduate/graduate coursework in health-related sciences strongly preferred.
Exceptional written and verbal communications skills required.
Sound news judgment and track record of identifying and promoting stories of interest to regional, national and international media.
