Media Organization: Documented
Documented is a nonprofit news organization that produces reporting for and about immigrant New Yorkers. We provide original news stories on the ground-level impact of shifts in labor policy, law–enforcement practices and bureaucratic requirements, and on the effects of new federal directives as well as Q&As and instructional guides that inform New Yorkers about food, health and financial aid and legal issues. We have won awards from the EPPYs, the Online News Association and Local Independent Online News Publishers. Our work has been mentioned by The New York Times, The Washington Post, in federal lawsuits, at the New York City Council and many other places.
Documented is seeking to hire a Caribbean Community Correspondent who will be tasked with providing information relevant to the lives of the Caribbean New Yorkers.
The role will initially focus on designing and building a vertical focused on engaging with the Caribbean community in New York. This will entail conducting in-depth audience research and learning about the information needs and habits of the community. The correspondent will work with the Documented team to use this research to design, develop and launch a news product focused on the Caribbean community.
Post-launch, this correspondent will be required to regularly engage with Caribbean New Yorkers and the organizations that aim to serve them. These engagements will happen in person and digitally. In general, the community correspondent should become the representative of Documented within the community and use the newsroom’s journalistic skills to serve the community. They will also share insights on what the newsroom should be covering based on engagement efforts such as digital or in-person conversations, events, protests, surveys, or research.
The correspondent will use these insights to write stories that could take the form of service journalism aimed at helping the community, feature stories, investigations or spot news.
