Job Description

Red Ventures is seeking a reporter to cover higher education news and trends for BestColleges.com. We're looking for someone comfortable on a general assignment, breaking news beat who can write daily stories that are of interest to both students and a general audience.

Whether you're investigating a hot-button issue or describing industry trends, we want a reporter who is unafraid to ask big questions, such as: What is the future of higher education? How are colleges innovating programs and online learning? What political issues are vital to college students right now?

What You'll Do
Pitch, report, and write daily news stories (around 20 per month) for a web audience, including short takes on current news and issues, human interest pieces, and occasional longer-form analysis and features.
Gather, verify, and report breaking news according to editorial guidelines and best practices.
Monitor news and trends related to higher education, online learning, federal policy changes, and related issues impacting students.
Conduct interviews with relevant sources and subject-matter experts.
Develop a list of industry sources and build relationships with thought leaders.
Concept original story ideas, occasionally writing larger feature stories or special reports.
Learn and employ SEO best practices to ensure content is highly visible in search engines.
Ability to serve as a spokesperson for media interviews is a plus.

As a reporter, you will closely follow issues like college affordability, campus life and politics, student debt and finances, and higher education policy. You should be nimble, creative, and curious, capable of anticipating trending issues and stories. A collaborative mindset and ability to work as part of a team is a must.

What We're Looking For
3+ years of experience in a newsroom or related journalism experience.
Familiarity with higher education is a plus, but not required.
A bachelor's degree in journalism, English, creative writing, or a related field.
A portfolio of published work.
In-depth research skills and high attention to detail.
Strong familiarity with AP Style and journalism fundamentals.
Self-motivated with a track record of success managing multiple projects and meeting deadlines.
Familiarity with SEO best practices is a plus.
