Job Description

I. Job Summary | The editorial assistant for the lifestyle vertical (which primarily covers Home and Travel topics) is responsible for pitching, writing and reporting news, features and stories across PEOPLE’s various platforms, most notably for the weekly magazine and People.com. The ideal candidate is a creative, organized, self-starting team player who thrives in a fast-paced environment, has excellent writing and reporting skills, possesses a vast knowledge about entertainment and lifestyle personalities, has an understanding of the PEOPLE voice and a knack for storytelling, has superior entertainment news judgment, and can juggle multiple assignments and deadlines.

II. Essential Job Functions:
-- 60% Contributes to People.com: pitches, reports and writes multiple stories a day.

-- 20% Contributes to PEOPLE magazine: Pitching, conducting interviews, reporting and writing for travel, home, lifestyle and other sections of the magazine (from front of book to long-form features); research and factchecking.

-- 15% Administrative-editorial support: Maintaining editorial calendars.

-- 5% Event and red carpet coverage.

III. Minimum Qualifications and Job Requirements

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, English or related field OR equivalent related experience

Experience: Interest in entertainment news and lifestyle topics is desired, ideally with a past internship or work experience in either.

Specific Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
-- Excellent writing, reporting and editing skills.
-- Passion for journalism with sound editorial judgment.
-- Advanced fact checking and research skills—must be resourceful, fast, savvy and accurate.
-- An adept understanding of AP Style and SEO-friendly copy is crucial; copy must be clean and journalistically sound.
-- Must display high degree of interest in entertainment, travel, home and lifestyle topics and personalities, with knowledge of media in general.
-- Good interpersonal skills.
-- Proficiency with Mac, WordPress, digital publishing (SEO, social media platforms, etc.).
-- Ability to multi-task, prioritize and organize.
-- Able to think creatively to conceptualize viable stories.
