Since launching in 2020, we’ve published more than 1,000 stories from nearly 100 countries outside the West. Our work explores the spaces where tech, business, culture and human experience collide, through compelling storytelling and fresh, innovative design. Our journalism ranges from deep authoritative reporting to highlighting the surprising online cultural phenomenons. We’ve covered everything from gig workers, internet shutdowns and supply chain abuses to livestreaming battles, disappeared influencers and unexpected crypto contagion. Our reporting has won recognition in the U.S. and internationally, and our work has prompted companies and policymakers to take action.

Job Description

Rest of World is looking for an Audience Intern, a 3-6 month opportunity to work with the audience team and collaborate with our editorial staff on new initiatives in social media. The right person for this opportunity appreciates the art and science of reaching, engaging, and building loyal readership among a truly global audience, and knows a thing or two about social video, speaking to online communities, and how people are finding news right now. You understand the uses and idiosyncrasies of each of the key social platforms, with specific experience creating for TikTok, Instagram, and other video-first platforms. You know how to listen for what audiences are discussing and sharing in platforms that reach across the geographies and subjects we cover. We’re looking to find new ways to connect with people around the stories we’re telling, and want your help in experimenting, testing, and measuring how to get there.

This position will report to the Head of Audience and work closely with our audience and editorial teams.

Location: New York, NY

Create social content from our stories for TikTok, Instagram, and other platforms
Work closely with the editorial team to translate their work into visually compelling social posts with a focus on vertical video formats including scripted and unscripted content
Conceptualize ideas for short stories and posts that can be produced and executed entirely on specific platforms
Ideate on ways to spark conversation with our audience and build interest around our journalists

Do you get how sharing and engagement works on the internet works? You’re qualified
Video and audio creation and editing experience, and particularly in-platform editing and creation tools
Knowledge of major platforms, including Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Discord
Ability to write witty headlines and introductions for stories
Understands what kind of images and illustrations resonate with younger audience
Ability to work in an experimental environment

The internship will pay $20/hour for up to 20 hours per week. The internship will last from July-September, with the possibility of extending through the end of the year. (We may also be able to amend to accommodate alternate schedules that better match applicants' university calendars.)
