Journalism Job

Media Organization: Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Company Description

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette is a Pulitzer Prize-winning newspaper and the largest news organization in western Pennsylvania. Unlike many other major U.S. dailies, it still supports a Washington DC bureau (two reporters), a state capital bureau chief and a full-time investigations team that takes on major projects.

Job Description

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the largest news organization serving western Pennsylvania, is seeking an ambitious data reporter who will help lead stories for the PG's investigations team, overseeing the collection and analysis of data for some of the newspaper’s most important work.

A key player in the newsroom, this reporter will help plan strategy for the use of data and will work closely with the PG's data visualization team to create powerful and original web and social media presentations.

Just this year, the team’s work (in a joint investigation with ProPublica) captured a Polk Award, a Goldsmith Award finalist, and first place finishes in the Association of Health Care Journalists and Society For Features Journalism contests, among others.

The reporter should have a knack for wrangling data sets from government agencies and for finding the trends and patterns that can elevate investigations and lead to high-impact stories. Expectations include the mining of data, pitching story ideas, and ultimately creating journalism that our readers can't get anywhere else.

Candidates should have at least one year of computer-assisted reporting experience, knowledge of at least one programming language, like Python, R or SQL, and have the ability to move quickly on big stories. Demonstrated requester of FOIA and public records is a plus.
