The mission of IndyKids is to engage youth in becoming informed world citizens and community leaders through the production of a quarterly current events and social justice news source in print, created for kids, by kids. IndyKids is celebrating its 20th year of publication.
The flagship of IndyKids is our quarterly journalism workshop. We also hold in-person workshops in schools and the community, and our work is used in classrooms, libraries, and community centers across the country. Most of our students receive full scholarships to attend our programs.
We are a very small but dedicated part-time staff, who currently work primarily remotely and independently, with occasional remote and in-person meetings. We operate in a non-hierarchial manner and encourage new ideas.
Job Description
Part-Time | 10-15 hours/week | $25/hour
Hybrid – Some in-person duties in NYC, requires travel around the city
IndyKids, a nonprofit newspaper for kids, by kids, is seeking a part-time Outreach & Distribution Coordinator to provide key marketing and outreach support for our publication and educational programs.
This is a hybrid role based in New York City with flexible hours and meaningful work supporting youth journalism and media literacy.
This is a great opportunity for a grad student, freelancer, or other professional eager to play a critical role in our organization’s growth.
Key Responsibilities:
-Help IndyKids increase circulation of our print issues and visibility through outreach efforts to schools, libraries, community organizations, and educators
-Manage and distribute printed copies of IndyKids to local cafés, bookstores, libraries, and other community spaces, and create an online map of locations
-Help with order fulfillment for the quarterly newspaper
-Support initiatives and lead events promoting IndyKids in the community
-Strengthen our relationships with existing collaborators and identify additional collaborations to expand IndyKids’ reach
Regularly monitor and respond to organization emails
-Create and send email campaigns using Mailchimp, in collaboration with other staff
-Collaborate with the social media manager to promote IndyKids
Qualifications:
-A self-starter eager to take ownership of projects, hit the ground running, and able to work independently
-Demonstrated outreach experience
-Experience with Mailchimp, WordPress, and Google Drive
-A strong writer and clear communicator
-Reliable, highly organized, and good at managing their time and responsibilities
-Excited to explore and engage with different parts of NYC
-Passionate about journalism, social justice issues, and education
A big plus: has contacts in the education, nonprofit, publishing, or library networks in NYC
