Talty’s Ocean Dispatch is a weekly newsletter about the ocean, that educates people about key ocean decisions and scientific breakthroughs, as well as spark joy through marine species and human feats. In 2026, the first-ever global ocean treaty came into effect; as the High Seas Treaty negotiation progresses it is crucial that more people understand and learn about what is happening on the ocean.

Covering over 70% of the planet, the ocean is essential to life on earth. Its expanse, although awe-inspiring, can make it hard for advocates to connect and follow news from different corners of the world. This newsletter aims to close that gap by educating readers about ocean-related world events.

Job Description

Seeking a News Assistant for a weekly ocean newsletter on Substack, Talty’s Ocean Dispatch.

Requirements:
Excellent writing and copy editing skills.
A self starter with interest in the ocean.
Strong news sense and ability to read scientific studies.
Available for three hours a week, either on Monday or Friday.
Ability to find open source photography and/or request photo permissions.

Preferred:
Background in science writing or marine science studies.
Interest in developing own stories.
Strong technical skills for Substack, CapCut, Canva or Instagram.
Vibe coding capable with Gemini/Claude.

Compensation: $22 per hour for three hours a week through November. Possibility of expanding hours in 2027. Must be able to overlap some working hours with the East Coast, USA. No requirement to be based in the US.
