Media-Related Job

Media Organization: Princeton University

Company Description

Established in 2011, the Julis-Rabinowitz Center for Public Policy & Finance at Princeton’s School of Public & International Affairs focuses on expanding knowledge about the interactions between financial markets and the macroeconomy, with the aim of improving the design and implementation of public policies. An in-depth understanding of both financial markets and macroeconomics is required to design and implement sound public policies. We promote research and teaching in these fields to inspire thought leaders and policymakers to work together to prevent financial crises. The Center offers unique opportunities for collaboration among students, researchers, financial industry professionals, and public policy practitioners that include an annual conference, public talks, a visitors program, research projects, course offerings, and funding opportunities for Princeton University students.
We inform and educate policymakers, both current and aspiring, about the interactions between financial markets and the real economy.
We host events bringing together experts from the public sector, academia, and the financial industry.
We engage undergraduate and graduate students through mentorship, critical discourse, and grants for internships and scholarly travel

Job Description

The senior editor will serve as an intellectual and editorial partner to the faculty director on two book projects with very different audiences: a graduate textbook on macrofinance and a trade book examining global macroeconomics, international finance, and the dynamics of inequality and growth. The editor will help shape structure, style, and voice across these two projects, ensuring the textbook is pedagogically effective for doctoral students and making the trade book engaging and accessible for non-specialists. The editor will conduct journalistic-style background research to develop real-world case examples for the trade book, drawing on news coverage, policy reports, academic literature, and other primary sources. This may include interviewing practitioners or policymakers to develop case material, as directed by the author. The senior editor may also support editorial needs for op-eds or essays as capacity allows.

Duties and Responsibilities
Editorial:
- Substantive and developmental editing
- Improves the organization, argument, narrative structure, pacing, clarity, and accessibility of chapters across both books
- Turns rough drafts, notes, transcripts, technical material, and AI-assisted text into polished prose, while preserving the author’s ideas and voice

Explaining Economics Clearly:
- Identifies arguments that are technically correct but insufficiently intuitive
- Helps develop better explanations, examples, analogies, and transitions to make technical material land with the intended audience
- Checks important factual claims, statistics, historical examples, references, and citations
- Identifies claims that require additional sourcing, updated data, or the author’s direct sign-off before publication

Required Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience as a book editor, journalist, or writer working with complex economic, financial, or policy material for both technical and general audiences
- Strong facility with macroeconomics and finance concepts, sufficient to identify gaps in intuition and propose clearer explanations
- Excellent prose stylist, with a portfolio or writing samples that show range across technical and narrative registers
- Research and fact-checking discipline, including comfort with primary sources, data verification, and citation standards
- Ability to work independently and iteratively over one year

To Apply

This is a freelance retainer contracted through Princeton University, scoped at 50 to 60 hours a month. The expectation is that the editor will be working on both books simultaneously. The position will be mostly remote with some in-person time. Compensation will be in the range of $50-$80/hour, based on qualifications. If interested please email your resume and cover letter to jrcppf-hr@princeton.edu.
