Contributing/Freelance Writer

Not Mad is looking for content from college-aged writers — we publish a diverse and varied mix of material (op-eds, playlists, interviews, reviews) and are opening to publishing material on pretty much anything.

We don't pay, but we have a dedicated readership, allow for tons of editorial freedom and pride ourselves on being a group of editors passionate about not only publishing the best content possible, but working with young writers to bring out their voice and improve their writing.

Our op-eds and reviews hover between 800-1200 words, and we greatly encourage hyperlinks, first person and experimental structures. Our interviews are more flexible, usually between 700-1500 words, while our playlists sit around 500 words.

Now that we're based in New York, contributors would have the opportunity to do in person reads and edits with some of our staff.

Paid Collaborator

Not Mad is seeking a current NYU Journalism student to work as a collaborator on the site, working with and reporting directly to co-founder and Editor-in-Chief Jackson Howard. The job is multi-faceted; it would entail social media work, newsletter formatting, content curation and writing, fielding submissions, editing pieces, working with writers, transcribing interviews and more.

This person would need to be passionate about the site, our message and online media, up to date with current events and pop culture, at ease collaborating with others, able to keep tight deadlines and ready to contribute immediately. The job would entail at the most 10 hours per week of individual work and a night or two per week of in-person work for an hour or so around NYU.

The job would provide the opportunity not only to be a published author online with more or less unlimited editorial freedom, but to contribute to an exciting and constantly growing publication centered around millennial interest and to learn more about online publishing, social media and the editing process.

Odyssey Content Creator

Odyssey is expanding a team of writers interested in learning how to cover TV content. Each week, writers would select one topic for an article based on what's going on in the television industry (recaps, reviews, breaking news, interviews, etc.)

They would submit their work and have it professionally edited and published on the website. After that, they'd receive coaching on the best-practices for sharing this article on social media to maximize its outreach.

A more passive responsibility will be to be receptive to feedback and best-practices on how to cover and talk about television from your Managing Editor, a professional editor/tv reporter. The goal is to expand your education while also giving you professional clippings that are published on our platform to show potential future employers.

The only requirement is that you submit some piece of content weekly.
