Web Intern Spring 2018

O, The Oprah Magazine is seeking a hard-working, web-savvy and enthusiastic web intern to join our staff for the spring 2018 semester. This is a part-time, unpaid internship position. Duties will include production, photo research, market work, research for stories, social media, and brainstorming story ideas.

Applicants should be comfortable in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment. They should be diligent managers of their own time and not afraid to ask questions. A passion for journalism and for women’s magazines in particular, as well as enthusiasm about exploring the many creative opportunities involved in web journalism, are essential. Writing experience and strong research skills are a must. Web experience is a plus, but not necessary. Additionally, a sense of humor and diverse interests are welcome.

Editorial Internship

Observer.com is updated daily, with original reporting and analysis that consistently make national news; the newsroom also runs sites on politics, culture and real estate.

The Observer’s newsroom boasts a unique and tightly knit culture that benefits from both the energy and fearlessness of young reporters and as the experience and wisdom of editors. Interns are integrated into this environment, where they have the opportunity to gain invaluable reporting and general newsroom experience. Interns are charged with fact-checking articles as they move from writer to editor to copy desk to production. When not on deadline, interns are encouraged to become acquainted with editors and writers, get involved in longer-term projects, and do their own reporting and writing.

Observer runs three internship sessions a year: spring (early January through May), summer (June through August) and fall (early September through December).

Most interns work two days a week. Many of our interns are published online, and some have continued to write for us after their internships have ended.

Observer also not infrequently hires from its pool of interns, present and past.

Interns work out of our Manhattan office on Seventh Avenue, near 28th Street, covering local neighborhood news on the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, downtown and Chelsea. Interns work closely with editorial staff, attend weekly story meetings and report on and write everything from arts features to investigations.
We require interns to commit to two full weekdays. Days and times are flexible. Internships are unpaid and MUST be eligible for school credit.
Duties include:
• Reporting and writing profiles, Q&As, feature stories, news stories, investigative pieces, news briefs, and other stories

We do not do reviews, either of arts events or food/restaurants, but we do stories about the people behind those events and restaurants.

We are a small staff, so you’ll be a key member of the team. Interns pitch story ideas and write short articles for the magazine and the website. They typically receive at least one byline each issue. Other duties include working closely with staff on story research and special projects, proofing print and online copy, helping to manage editorial content on our website, and occasional transcription and light clerical work.

Journalist

We offer 1-3 month training programmes geared towards print journalism.

Participants are involved in all aspects of magazine production, and take tuition modules on the side aimed at strengthening linguistic and journalistic skills essential for being a journalist in Bolivia.

The experience involves learning about journalism and Bolivian culture in an immersive environment. The programme fee covers 40 hours of tuition per month (covering Spanish, journalism, and photography), as well as your accommodation (living with volunteers and locals in the BX house), lunch, internet access, mobile phone, airport pickup, pre-trip guidance and a press pass during your stay.

Aside from the training, you are tasked with doing research and writing your own articles or producing photo-essays, with ample opportunity to practice your Spanish, or with assistance from an interpreter. You can also help design the magazine.

As part of the learning experience you will intern within the organisation to produce a monthly magazine which is distributed for free across Bolivia. You will therefore be volunteering as part of a cultural project which aims to foster ties between Bolivia and the English-speaking world by producing news and content from an under-reported region.

We are looking for people interested in discovering Bolivian culture. Whether you are focusing on learning the language, want a journalism internship, have a passion for photography, are an avid writer or enjoy magazine design, there will be something for you. You must speak fluent English, be at least seventeen years old, and have an observant eye and inquisitive spirit. Spanish is helpful but not essential. Graduates, professionals, students and school-leavers and are all welcome; responsibilities and challenges are assigned according to experience.
