Paid Spring 2018 Internship - NPR's Planet Money

Do you ever wonder about the future of work? Or trade deals? Or ask why a $60,000 handbag is always out of stock? Or what frozen chicken has to do with the price of pickup trucks?

Are you a regular Planet Money listener and fan? Are ready to hit the phones in search of the perfect character? To read the footnotes of CRS reports? To record the sound of a self-checkout machine over and over until you get it just right? To be proud of your weird interests and follow them as far as you can? To pitch story, after story, after story? To transcribe some tape? To write copy for npr.org and our social media accounts?

We’re a team of deeply curious economics and business reporters, and we love telling stories. We work out of NPR’s office in New York City (no Tiny Desk concerts here, sorry). We make two podcasts a week, and plenty of radio stories. Even though we’ve been around for awhile, we like to keep our show scrappy: To try new, ambitious things, all to help people understand their daily lives and the world.

We’d love to have you along for the journey, even if it’s just for a few months -- we love to teach, and we’re looking for someone who’s eager to learn.

If this sounds like something you can throw yourself into for a semester, please apply! We’ll be in touch.

-Pitch great stories

-Write copy for npr.org for each episode

-Respond to listener emails, follow up on their story ideas

-Do research into your ideas, and ours

-Book guests

-Help with tracking reporter narration in studio

-Help identifying and preparing past episodes for rebroadcast

Qualifications:

-Excellent writing, researching and analytical skills

-Ability to work independently, quickly and accurately, while under deadline pressure

-Web skills including knowledge of basic blogging software

-A natural interest in engaging audiences on social media

-Being easy to work with, even on tight deadlines

Intern

We are interviewing candidates for an internship that begins as soon as possible and spans through November. Interns work two days a week. The intern will assist in the production of a feature-length documentary film which examines the current state of the American middle class.

The intern's responsibilities will include a mix of office administrative work, writing research memos, participating in production planning, logging footage, and other tasks. If the intern would like college credit, they would have to take initiative throughout the process by bringing in forms and ensuring that the college's requirements correlate with what we offer. Although the internships are unpaid, we have a strong track record of hiring or recommending our interns for hire into production teams. Journalism students are especially encouraged to apply.

Our interns have the opportunity to learn about the long-form documentary film production process (as well as some of the aspects of running a small business) in an environment where questions are valued, important, and welcome. They will get to see the creative process in action along with the nuts and bolts of what goes into making a social-issue documentary.
