News intern

Straus News, which in Manhattan comprises four weekly newspapers, seeks capable and enthusiastic editorial interns for the summer, fall and spring semesters.

Interns work out of our Manhattan office on Seventh Avenue, near 28th Street, covering local neighborhood news on the Upper West Side, Upper East Side, downtown and Chelsea. Interns work closely with editorial staff, attend weekly story meetings and report on and write everything from arts features to investigations.

We require interns to commit to two full weekdays. Days and times are flexible. Internships are unpaid and MUST be eligible for school credit.

Duties include:
• Reporting and writing profiles, Q&As, feature stories, news stories, investigative pieces, news briefs, and other stories
• Attending weekly editorial meetings
• Pitching stories
• Helping research investigative stories
• Doing "man-on-the-street" interviews
• Taking photos and videos

Interns will report on local government, transportation, small businesses, schools, crime, the arts and development, as well as write profiles.

We like stories that inform our smart, loyal readers about their neighborhoods, stories that they are not likely to read elsewhere. These are published in the West Side Spirit, Our Town, Our Town Downtown and Chelsea News.

We do not do reviews, either of arts events or food/restaurants, but we do stories about the people behind those restaurants, stories of businesses closing or moving, as well as event previews.

Interns will get help, advice and suggestions on pitching stories, developing them, reporting and research, and writing (and re-writing). You will leave with a wealth of published clips, with the range of topics and story types determined by your abilities and, at least in part, your interests.

Editorial Intern

Psychology Today has an excellent opportunity for a few smart and talented editorial interns at our office in New York. We are a small staff, so you’ll be a key member of the team. Interns pitch story ideas and write short articles for the magazine and the website. They typically receive at least one byline each issue. Other duties include working closely with staff on story research and special projects, proofing print and online copy, helping to manage editorial content on our website, and occasional transcription and light clerical work.

Journalism experience and an interest in human behavior required. Background in psychology and/or experience writing science stories not mandatory, but a major plus. Must be able to juggle several tasks at once and work autonomously.

The position runs September through December; weekly schedule is flexible.

Journalism, Investigative research and reporting

We are looking for enthusiastic journalists, reporters, and writers to work with us as interns with potential opportunities for advancement.

As an expanding startup operation, interns have opportunities to work - depending on their specific career interests - in a wide variety of operations, including field reporting, video interviewing of guests, digital writing, editing, and more.

We will provide direct supervision and work with you to pursue work that aligns with your interests and skills. We would like writers to help us primarily with reporting on issues and news that are otherwise underreported in the mainstream media (issues like political corruption in the US and internationally, lack of funding to communities, social and environmental issues affecting quality of life, etc.), and writing current events/news pieces. We value creativity and would like our intern to help grow our website with quality writing free of grammar and spelling errors.

Through working as an intern, you will be able to do more than just research. You will be able to pitch story ideas and create these ideas into final products. You will be able to improve your writing skills and build a portfolio of your skills and interests. You will work under the supervision of a writer, who can help formulate your ideas and writing.

In addition to writers/ journalists, we are looking for video editing interns to help us with our guest interviews and filmed roundtable discussions.

We are a diverse, fun, and welcoming group, and we look forward to hearing from you.
