U.S. Right to Know is seeking a reporter to expand our work educating consumers and policymakers about our food system. This is primarily an investigative position that requires someone who can generate their own story ideas. We largely report on events and issues other journalists miss, and work to bring awareness and attention to important food industry actions and trends.
Our work has been featured in the New York Times, Boston Globe, BMJ, Bloomberg, San Francisco Chronicle, Time, the Guardian, Le Monde, STAT, McClatchy, San Diego Union-Tribune, Mother Jones, Nature Biotechnology, Critical Public Health and many other outlets.
The reporter will need to be curious and energetic, skilled in the preparation of FOIA requests, and the development of sources inside companies, legislatures and regulatory agencies. The reporter will be expected to write articles, op-eds, blogs, social media posts and produce fact sheets on key issues.
The reporter can be based anywhere in the United States. This is a full-time position.
Qualifications
Journalism experience is strongly preferred
Exceptional writing and research skills
Science background is preferred
Knowledge of food, agriculture, sweeteners, food additives and preservatives, pesticides, environmental health, public health, soda and/or obesity issues is preferred
Computer literate, and comfortable with acquiring new skills
Flexible and able to manage multiple projects
Self-motivated and able to work independently
