Job Description

We are looking for a freelance reporter interested in the commercial art industry to take on assignments and/or pitch stories 1-4 times a month for use in both print and online.

We want someone who can see the bigger picture, who can apply the biggest stories about global financial trends to the shadowy and weird world of the art market.

We are *not* necessarily looking for traditional "art reporters!" We are more interested in your reporting and writing skills than the depth of your knowledge about stuff like Picasso's blue period (although if you do know about that, or even just have a desire to learn about it, great!).

This beat would be perfect for someone who wants to publish stories like:
• How Trump has created a new tax loophole for art collectors
• The rise of art-secured lending: is it a bubble about to burst?
• Blockchain technology and transparency in the art market
• Art dealers found guilty of tax fraud and backdated invoicing
•Shady third-party deals in auction houses, such has the recent $450 million-dollar sale of Da Vinci's Salvator Mundi

The best candidates will have the following:
• Strong clips as a business reporter, including a mix of breaking news and analysis
• Strong reporting and writing skills
• An appreciation for or interest in art of any era or genre

Candidates based in New York City are preferable but applications are encouraged regardless of location.

To Apply

Please send a resume, cover letter and three strong clips (a plus if art-related, but not required) to margaret@theartnewspaper.com
