Media Organization: 1010 WINS Digital

1010 WINS is embarking on an exciting transformation of its digital news operation and is seeking experienced journalists with strong news judgement and news-gathering skills, as well as a passion for local news and audio storytelling. This team will work to grow 1010 WINS Digital’s audience across all platforms, including the website, social channels, newsletter and mobile initiatives. Job Description

Responsibilities:
=Serve or assist as the news lead in any give shift, overseeing news coverage, determining what stories need to be covered, and responding to breaking news by assigning the story or writing the story yourself and determining how to disseminate the story (social, push alerts) as quickly as possible
-Constantly monitor sources of breaking news (Dataminr, Twitter, AP, etc.)
-Collaborate and determine if a story is reportable in conjunction with the 1010 WINS news desk, reporters and producers; suggest how to report out and advance stories
-Assign stories to writers and edit their copy to ensure content is clean, error-free, meets AP style and contains appropriate elements Write clean, tight news stories, with all applicable elements, including SEO-optimized headlines, photos, video, audio and embedded social elements with speed and accuracy
-Post to social media accounts, compose push notifications and newsletters, with a knack for ascertaining the type of headline/copy language that works best for each platform
Source photos from photo agencies, social media and other sources
-Develop story ideas, series, and special projects that complement broadcast news coverage, and seek ways to enhance articles with audio
-Review and approve podcasts and other specialty multimedia content
Use real-time analytics in Google Analytics and Chartbeat to drive editorial/story decisions
-Develop and maintain editorial calendar and keep abreast of all significant events, both local and national

Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree, journalism degree a plus
-Outstanding news judgment and ability to work under deadline pressure
-Ability to evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas
-Strong editing, writing, reporting and story development skills and editorial judgement
-A knack for transforming a piece of audio into a compelling digital article
-Experience managing, coaching and mentoring reporters and writers
-Ability to refine and optimize podcasts and audio content for digital distribution
-Solid experience with social media publishing tools and CMS software
-Experience with Adobe Audition, or similar audio editing program, is a plus
-Available early mornings, early evenings, weekends, depending on schedule and breaking news

Candidates will be asked to submit writing samples

Desired Characteristics:
-Passion for local news, podcasts, and digital media
-Strong news acumen, with knowledge of a several topics, from local news to politics to entertainment
5+ years of experience reporting, writing, editing at a news organization, preferably in New York City
-Ability to evaluate news leads and news tips to develop story ideas
-Must have desire to work in creative, demanding competitive environment
-Strong organizational skills and solid work ethic
-Excellent interpersonal skills
