Media Organization: The Diplomat
The Diplomat is the premier international current-affairs magazine for the Asia-Pacific region. Since its launch in 2002, it has been dedicated to quality analysis and commentary on events occurring in Asia and around the world. Now published exclusively online, The Diplomat reaches an influential audience of commentators, policymakers and academics with its in-depth treatment of regional issues.
The Diplomat provides expert coverage on:
• Geo-political trends throughout the Asia-Pacific
• Defense and intelligence
• Environment, human security and development
• Arts, social trends and popular culture
The position will entail working remotely for much of the time and so an enthusiastic self-starter is essential. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in international affairs, a proven background in the Asia-Pacific (through education or experience), and will have demonstrable experience working in an online environment. Special consideration will be given to candidates with prior journalism experience, especially in environmental concerns, women's issues, and cultural news.
The assistant editor will be responsible for supporting the editor with day-to-day editing duties, fact checking, research and sourcing new material for the magazine. There will be writing opportunities for the right candidate, but we are looking for more than just enthusiastic, budding journalists – we need someone who knows how to find new readers as well as take responsibility for enhancing the content of our blogs and generate ideas for features.
Experience editing non-native speakers is a major advantage.
Applicants should also be strongly familiar with social networking and outreach. We’re not just talking about being able to update Facebook and Twitter – candidates should understand how to use a range of media to build an audience and further develop the reputation of a quality news publication.
This is a varied and challenging role, but has enormous potential for someone able to take initiative and help us build on our success
